Understanding Atrial Fibrillation: Causes, Symptoms, and Management

Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) is a common heart rhythm disorder characterized by an irregular and often rapid heartbeat. It occurs when the upper chambers of the heart (atria) beat chaotically, disrupting the normal flow of blood into the lower chambers (ventricles). This condition can lead to serious complications if not properly managed, making awareness and early detection essential.


One of the primary causes of Atrial Fibrillation is damage or changes to the heart’s structure. Conditions such as high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, heart valve disorders, and previous heart surgeries can increase the risk. Lifestyle factors like excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, obesity, and chronic stress also contribute significantly. In some cases, AFib may occur without any identifiable cause, particularly in otherwise healthy individuals.
